Project Overview
The St. Aloysius Technical Training Institute was started in 1981 as a Centenary
project of the St. Aloysius College, to impart training in a technical trade to
boys who are intellectually challenged but are skilful with their hands.
Three courses of one year duration each were started: carpentry, plumbing and cutting
and tailoring. A fourth course in welding was added in 1984. The Technical Training
Institute was housed in an old dilapidated building which formerly was the boarding
house.
The rooms were not quite suited for classrooms and workshops needed for a technical
course. The Institute was officially called St. Aloysius Industrial Training Institute
from 1998.

Background of the students
Most students come from economically poor families. They have difficulties to continue
regular schooling either due to poverty or inability to learn. But they are good
in manual skills.
Out of the total of 192 students 14 are girls and the rest are boys. Most of them
get a job when they graduate from the Institute.
Project Milestones
A new building was constructed on the Kudmul Ranga Rao Road, Mangalore. The electronics
and electric wiring courses which were started earlier were upgraded as two year
NCVT courses and a new course in Refrigeration and Air conditioning was introduced
in 1997. In 2002 a course in Motor Mechanics was started. Due to the large number
of candidates, a non-formal course in Motor Mechanics was also started in 2003
Project Needs
We have 19 staff members. The government pays 70% of the salaries of 3 staff. The
rest are paid by the management. In the meantime the government has informed us
that the grants will not be paid any more. Paying staff of non-grant-in-aid courses
an adequate salary is our endeavor. We are unable to pay this as our source of income
is only the fees we collect from the students. The total fees collected per annum
are only $21,486, whereas the total expenses to run the institute amount to $45,604
including the salaries for the year. The Management is subsidizing the courses to
meet the expenses from a corpus fund. However due to falling rates of interest it
is not possible to increase the subsidy, if salaries of staff are to be raised.
The students come from very poor homes and cannot afford to pay any higher fees
than what are presently charged. Many of them are not even able to pay the present
fees.
We wish to start two new courses - Auto electrician and Fashion designing. Both
are meant for the poor and will be offered at affordable fees unlike similar courses
offered by “commercial” colleges. We wish to admit a greater percentage
of girls for whom a greater subsidy is needed.
